Stories, and paintings, and sculptures, and cookbooks. And songs, and poems, and fashions. And more. The list is still growing. It took some time for us to fully understand and appreciate what these people were saying. Eventually we realized that there is no more profound way in which people could express what Star Trek has meant to them than by creating their own very personal Star Trek things. Because I am a writer, it was their Star Trek stories that especially gratified me. I have seen these writings in dog-eared notebooks of fans who didn’t look old enough to spell ‘cat.’ I have seen them in meticulously produced fanzines, complete with excellent artwork. Some of it has even been done by professional writers, and much of it has come from those clearly on their way to becoming professional writers. Best of all, all of it was plainly done with love…. That is the highest compliment and the greatest repayment that they could give us.”

-
Gene Roddenberry (via craic-dealer)

It’s always nice to see quotes like this from creators rather than the “omg you’re stealing and raping my babies, you evil monsters” sort of stuff. (Somehow folks with the latter attitude always seem to be more visible.)

I was at a convention once (sort of, long story) and had a long chat with a woman who claimed to have once been Gene Roddenberry’s assistant for a time. She said he had a listed number and fanfic writers would call from time to time and ask questions. Her favorite was when someone asked what color Spock’s penis was.

(She was a little crazy. I have no clue if this story is true. I don’t really care, it’s still delightful even if it’s made up.)

waxjism:

Sammie Senyana , 24, only recently attended her first Broadway show, “Porgy and Bess,” when she saw an ad for “Streetcar” in Playbill.

“I saw Blair Underwood and I was like, ‘I’m coming to that!’” she said. “You can see them breathe, you can see them tick”

But Senyana’s sister, Brenda, said Broadway could do a better job of attracting black audiences.

“I refuse to believe it’s just money,” Brenda said. “I think people are willing to pay. … People can find the money to come. It’s really about feeling it’s worth it.”

Added Sammie, “I don’t think a lot of people feel they’re a part of this world.”
”

-
WNYC: Why Broadway Audiences are Whiter than Ever

The cast of Streetcar has been doing outreach events at churches. Fela got producers Jay-Z and Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith to promote it. Sean Combs got a whole lot of people to come out to Raisin in the Sun. I wish there were a better way than celebrities, but it seems to be the most effective way across the board, not just black audiences.

todaysdocument:

Okay I’m ready for every Scott Rudin production to offer 50 rush-priced, buyable-in-advance tickets for theatregoers under 35. Sounds like that’s what he’s doing, right? Lemme know when.

PS Clybourne Park is a big fat lie of an empty empty play.
