Not that Joy Division might have done this, but I’m pretty sure that Disney would sue any band who used their image of Mickey in this manner. Why should fair use continue to apply to them if they don’t think it exists for anyone else?

(Though yes, I know the difference between a trademark and copyright, though Mickey is under both, and think that this is fair use of Joy Division’s image. Also I’m sure someone else bought all this stuff when Factory went under, so who knows owns it.)

(Also it’s just tacky.)

This should be updated with Tiana. HELL YEAH, AMERICAN PRINCESSES. Also, why is Jasmine in India?

So that’s where Wonderland is.  Huh.

Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken confirmed to Playbill.com that Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein is writing a libretto for a stage version of “Newsies,” the 1992 live-action Disney movie musical about New York City paperboys in 1899.

Menken told Playbill.com, “Yeah, it is in development. What it’s going to be is — honestly, right now — undetermined. I think Disney is still trying to decide whether it’s a first-class production or whether it’s stock and amateur. But there will be available a stage musical of Newsies. That’s all I can say. I’ve been writing it with Harvey Fierstein and Jack Feldman. [How it emerges is] just gonna be [a] business decision of how Disney wants to proceed with it. But yes, we are developing it.”

The web-digging sleuths at Stitch Kingdom have uncovered a series of URLs registered recently by Disney. They reveal plans for not one, not two but… oh, loads of new stage shows and musicals to be adapted from big-screen movies. Some of them have already happened, some we’ve known about for some time, while others are complete and total shockers. The full list lies beyond the break, including a few surprising head-scratchers.

Aladdin
Alice in Wonderland
Calendar Girls
Citizen Ruth
Coyote Ugly
The Father of the Bride
The Flamingo Kid
Freaky Friday
Hunchback of Notre Dame
The Jungle Book
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Pirates of the Caribbean
Pollyana
Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion
Shakespeare in Love
Sister Act
Step Up
Toy Story
Yellow Submarine

Holy moses. Disney, you crazy.

Yeah, but if I were them, I’d grab every URL that might potentially even have a thought of maybe one day being a show. Just in case.  Domain registration is easy and cheap.

But Pirates?  Didn’t anyone learn anything from The Pirate Queen?  (Though I suppose the vampire lesson took a few tries.)
